Sponsored by PETA--People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, this organization boasts more than 1.8 million members/supporters, and considers itself the largest animal rights group in the world. Working through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, protest campaigns, and celebrity involvement, PETA seeks to raise awareness of the unethical treatment of animals. Most attention is given to factory farms, labs, the clothing trade, and the entertainment industry--situations where animals spend long periods of time in insufferable conditions.![]()

President Ingrid E. Newkirk leads the way of animal rights progress, especially on factory-farms. PETA's website states, "Animals are not ours to eat." In 2007, under PETA's pressure, Smithfield Foods--the world's largest pig-meat producer--agreed to reduce and phase out gestation crates for pregnant sows; Burger King, Wendy's, and CKE Restaurants, Inc. agreed to purchase more of their pig meat from crate-free suppliers; Casey Affleck, Peter Kinklage and others encouraged viewers of PETA ads to adopt a cruelty-free diet at GoVeg.com (a FREE Vegetarian Starter Kit). Most recently Oprah has signed PETA's pledge to go veg. Past Sexiest Vegetarian Alive Winners include The Tonight Show's Kevin Eubanks, Carrie Underwood, Kristin Bell, Prince, Chris Martin, Alicia Silverstone, Andre 3000, Lauren Bush, Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, and Shania Twain.
