Susan G. Komen Celebrates the 2008 25th Anniversary!

2008 marks the Susan G. Komen for the Cure 25th anniversary of the Race for the Cure.  It is the greatest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world.  Participation since 2005 has been over 1 million.j0424397.jpg

In 1983, the first race with 800 running participants took place in Dallas, Texas.  1986 initiated the first race outside of Dallas, in Peoria, Illinois--birthplace of Suzy Komen.

1990--First National Race for the Cure was held in Washington D.C.  Breast cancer survivors were recognized as those wearing pink ribbons.

By 1995 racing events were being held in 57 United States cities.

The first race event outside the United States was featured in Costa Rica in 1998.  Also, 1998 saw The National Race for the Cure become and remain the biggest registered 5K in the world.

Rome, Italy welcomed the first international Affiliate-hosted Komen Race for the Cure in the year 2000.  Within one season, 1 million plus participants finished.

2002 saw more than 100 Races, 1.3 million+ participants, and races in two foreign countries.

A 60-mile walk for those interested in a search for a cure for breast cancer is what it's all about.  It's an effort to raise funds which will support breast cancer research. A minimum of 25% of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race supports the Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Programs, sponsoring research, meritorious awards, educational and scientific conferences worldwide.  Up to 75% of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race stays in the local community, funding breast health education, screening, and treatment.

Whether you can walk or run, all involved are appreciated!
