Nov 11, 2008 A FirstLook Feature
Book Review: You Being Beautiful: The Owner’s Manual to Inner and Outer Beauty (Free Press, 2008) by Michael F. Roizen, M.D., and Mehmet C. Oz, M.D.
Michael F. Roizen, M.D. is a bestselling author and cofounder of RealAge.com. He is also chief wellness officer and chair of the Wellness Institute of the Cleveland Clinic.
Mehmet C. Oz, M.D. is a bestselling author and the health expert of The Oprah Winfrey Show. He is also professor and vice chairman of surgery at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University and the medical director of the integrated Medicine Center and the director of the Heart Institute.
Beauty is good health. How we appear on the outside tells others how healthy we really are. Roizen and Oz also write that research shows that external beauty is linked to personality and behavior. The goal behind You: Being Beautiful is to explain the biology of beauty, show the reader how to be her most beautiful self, and clarify what what beauty really is.
Roizen and Oz divide their new book into three major sections:
1. Looking Beautiful—covers skin, hair, mouth, finger and toe nails, the feet, and body shape; includes ingredients to avoid, to use, to eat; explains processes of growth, renewal, and aging
2. Feeling Beautiful—“centers around how well you harness energy and manage pain;” focuses on bodily energy, pain, depression, addictions, stress, and emotional intelligence
3. Being Beautiful—relationships, sex, happiness, prayer
Each section includes You Tips, Factoids, and You Tools which are quite beneficial.
Factoids answer questions like:
- What is the future of male pattern baldness?
- Why does hair grow out of my ears as I age?
- How is uric acid beneficial to my body?
- What is the relationship between personality and divorce?
- Can ginseng really enhance the sex life?
You: Being Beautiful is more than about outward physical good looks, rather it is a mind-body book. Doctors Roizen and Oz have successfully shown how our biological makeup, personality, outward stressors, and the care we give ourselves directly affect our beauty. Following the scope of new wellness books, You: Being Beautiful helps the reader get to know him or herself better, both inside and out.
