Let's face it, we all are afraid of growing older. Wrinkles, gray hair, libido slowdown, forgetfulness, weight gain, and muscle loss are probably feared as much as any disease itself. Yet, you've heard that 50 is the new 40. It can be. With the proper diet and daily exercise program, you really can add years to your life.
Celebrity trainer Kacy Duke, cofounder of Equinox Fitness Clubs and author of The Show It Love Workout: Celebrate the Body You Have, Get the Body You Want, writes that it is not a fact of life that women will become weaker over time, unable to do what they do now. "That is BS!" she exclaims. It's true that you may lose a little, but you do not need to have a dramatic decline.
Recent research from the Buck Institute for Age Research shows that exercise actually can reverse the aging of our muscles. A University At Buffalo Study concludes that regular exercise helps muscles keep their flexibility, protecting them from injury, while aging.
Kacy Duke states that a woman's strength naturally peaks at age 25, plateauing through 35-40, then quickly declining by age 60-65. The decline occurs because of misuse or disuse. After a few weeks of exercise though, you can build strength back, possible even with the elderly.
Kacy Duke's I Can resistance program is designed to augment and strengthen the muscles by toning and tightening. Each move in the series is three sets of 12 repetitions using a full range of motion and light to moderate weights. If you just can't keep your form, drop to two sets, adding the third back in later. Progress through the moves in a circuit, increasing weights after one week, for three times a week. Before beginning the circuit, complete five minutes of light cardio.
Denzel Washington, Kacy Duke's client for many years, says this, "I'm starting to do this for me not for the camera. I'm working out because I want to have a long, great life. I want to be fit and healthy for whatever comes. along."
