Under The Weather?

During the holidays, several friends of mine were sick.  It's a crummy time to feel like you need a stomach transplant.  David Zinczenko, Editor-in-Chief of Men's Health magazine and author of Eat This, Not That!  writes that the first line of defense in getting rid of a virus or the flu is not a visit to the pharmacy.  He'd rather you visit your grocery store.

Supermarket Defenses:

Ginseng Tea, Hot or Iced--Studies have shown that ginseng helps the body prevent acute respiratory illness.

Green Tea--This hot drink has been known for centuries to positively affect the body in many ways. It recently has been proven to prevent cold and flu symptoms.

Oranges--This citrus fruit is filled with vitamin C and zinc.  It's been known to decrease the severity and duration of cold symptoms.  Zinczenko states that one orange provides more than 100% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C.

Olive Oil and Avocados--These healthy fats, when consumed moderately, reduce inflammation.

Supermarket Offenses:

Caffeinated beverages and energy drinks--Extra caffeine affects the sleep schedule, suppressing the immune system, which allows viruses and infections to begin.  Caffeine, Zinczenko writes, dehydrates the body, and hydration is necessary during an illness.  Fluids move nutrients to the site of the infection, and remove toxins from the body.
