Should we indulge ourselves and then suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous guilt for consuming empty calories? Or should we abstain?

Last week, my girlfriend Deborah Wagner, a registered nurse, and I had an animated debate on this subject over a wineless lunch. Both of us work to maintain our weight between 128 and 132 pounds. Given our commitment, lunches inevitably begin with a self-assessment on how we’re doing, followed by the latest insights.

When the topic of wine came up, Deborah argued on behalf of the daily sip. As head of our community’s wellness program, Deborah is well informed, whereas my contrary point of view was strictly personal. Although my mind was made up, I was willing to listen.

Deborah asserted that her nightly glass of red wine is medically beneficial. She cited research claiming that a daily glass of red wine improves heart health, helps prevent tumors from growing and improves nerve function. Preventing or delaying heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s should be reason enough, Deborah said, to enjoy a glass of wine. However, the immediate benefit is the relaxing effect of wine. The nightly ritual makes the transition from work to home seamless.

Best of all, Deborah said, a glass of wine helps individuals maintain their weight. She based her assertion on research stating that people who consume a single drink a few times each week have a lower risk of obesity than teetotalers or heavy drinkers have. I could understand the connection between heavy drinking and surplus pounds, but I was surprised that a moderate amount of alcohol helped individuals stay trim.

My argument against indulging was not scientifically based but was nonetheless compelling to me. I seem incapable of drinking only one glass of red wine. If one glass tastes good, then the second glass tastes even better. I’ve also noticed that if I drink a glass of red wine with dinner, I crave sugar later in the evening. While the wine doesn’t cost too many calories, the sugared dessert I can no longer resist certainly does. In addition to consuming surplus calories, I feel less rested upon rising the following day. Throughout the day, my energy level is lower than usual even as my appetite is ratcheted up.

I’m 15 years older than Deborah, so our age difference might explain the different physiological reaction I reported. Or maybe I just have different body chemistry.

Had I been more prepared, I could have buttressed my antiwine argument by citing the dangers associated with drunkorexia, the latest eating disorder. This unofficial term describes individuals (mainly women) who starve themselves all day so they can indulge in alcohol later without feeling guilty about consuming too many calories. This abuse of alcohol leads to malnutrition, organ damage and weak bones. Treatment is complicated because the disorder is frequently part of a larger complex of dysfunctional behaviors, such as bulimia and anorexia.

Debbie and I ended our lunch without resolving our differing opinions on the value of a daily glass of red wine—we agreed to disagree. Like the good friends that we are, though, we had no problem agreeing on our next lunch date.

What’s your perspective?

Related--

Alcohol Promotes Cancer

Cost Effective Therapies For Alcohol Dependency
Can You Get Control of Your Drinking?
</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.basilandspice.com/healing-and-wellness/breast-development-girls-and-their-fears.html"><rss:title>Breast Development, Girls, and Their Fears</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.basilandspice.com/healing-and-wellness/breast-development-girls-and-their-fears.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Cancer Book Review 5 Stars Kelly Jad'on Breast Development Weiss, Marisa Friedman, Isabel Taking Care of Your Girls Breastcancer.org</dc:subject>
by Kelly Jad'on

Book Review: Taking Care of Your “Girls”: A Breast Health Guide for Girls, Teens, and In-Betweens (Three Rivers Press, 2008) by Marisa C. What matters most in
prevention or getting the most of treatments is not our genetic makeup
but the biology we create within our body to support our natural
defenses against tumor growth.

The Genetic Fallacy
Most of us live with the false belief that cancer is a genetic Russian
roulette. As one in three of us will die of cancer, the odds are indeed
as bad -- worse actually -- than those of that dreadful game.
But it is NOT genetic. A large Scandinavian study of identical twins
(who share exactly the same genes) found that in the majority of cases
they did not share the risk for cancer. In fact, the authors concluded,
in the New England Journal of Medicine, that "inherited genetic
factors make a minor contribution to susceptibility to most types of
[cancers]. This finding indicates that the environment has the
principal role in causing common cancers."

A New Approach to Cancer: Changing the Terrain
When it comes to treating cancer, there is no alternative to
conventional treatments: surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy,
immunotherapy or, soon, molecular genetics.

However, these treatments target the tumor much like an army wages war:
focusing all of its efforts on destroying the cancerous cells. Yet,
it's as important to change the environment that supports the
growth new cancer cells as it is to continue to pound them with
targeted attacks.

We all need to learn to change the "terrain" -- our
biology -- to make it as inhospitable as possible to cancer
growth. As much for prevention as to increase the benefits of
treatments.

The new model of cancer that has emerged from the last 10 years of
research moves us away from genetics and squarely into the life-style
factors that we can control.

Indeed, another New England Journal of Medicine study showed that
people who were adopted at birth have the cancer risk of their adoptive
parents rather than that of the parents who gave them their genes. At
most, genetic factors contribute 15% to our cancer risk. What matters
for 85% of cancers is what we do -- or do not do enough of --
with our life.

Since we all carry cancer cells in us, what determines whether we do
develop cancer is to a large extent the balance between factors that
promote cancer, and factors that help resist cancer.

Common promoters of cancer are:

Cigarette smoke and more than two alcoholic beverages per day

Refined sugar and white flour

Omega-6 fatty acids and trans-fats (corn, soybean, sunflower and
safflower oils, hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils)

A variety of chemical agents present in some foods and household products (parabens, phthalates, PVCs, pesticides and herbicides)

Complete lack of physical activity

Responses to stress that lead to feelings of helplessness and
persistent despair rather than a sense that one can help oneself or
count on the support of others

Factors that slow down the growth of cancer are:

Several phytochemicals contained in some fruits and some vegetables, some herbs and spices.

Omega-3 fatty acids (fatty fish, canola and flaxseed oil, flaxseeds, walnuts, some green vegetables)

Physical activity (at least 30 minutes of walking six times a week)

The ability to manage stress so as to avoid helplessness (emotional
management through meditation or yoga or good psychotherapy) or
benefiting from the support of intimate relationships, or both.

Knowing that genetics are only a minor contribution to cancer helps us
realize how much is in our power to help our body be a stronger partner
in nourishing life and resisting cancer.
I had to have a lumpectomy in 1996 and so my fear is that the breast cancer will return. Should I continue the Vytorin or stop it? --L.P., Washington, D.C.

ANSWER: The final decision is between you and your doctor, but here's more information about Vytorin to help you both make this decision. First of all, other readers may not realize that Vytorin is a combination drug so you can take one convenient pill instead of two. It contains a statin called simvastatin, which is sold as a stand-alone drug (Zocor). The other drug is ezetimibe, which is also sold as a stand-alone drug (Zetia). Simply put, Vytorin is the marriage of Zocor and Zetia, except they don't live happily ever after together.

Combination drugs are useful when stand-alone drugs fail to produce desired results. But whenever you take two drugs (even if they are combined in one pill), you will face more side-effects from both components in the pill. A recent study on Vytorin showed a dramatic increase in risk of developing cancer. No one is sure if it's the "Zocor" component or the "Zetia" component of the drug, but some scientists lean to the Zetia component (ie ezetimibe). It may be both components, and it may be neither. That will be sifted out in further studies. To be fair, not all studies on Vytorin show a cancer connection. Now, FDA officials, pharmaceutical executives and congressmen are scratching their heads trying to determine if this study result is a fluke or not. Let's take a closer look:

1. Vytorin contains a statin component.

2. Statins are drug-muggers of Coenzyme Q10.

3. The nutrient depletion of CoQ10 by statins is well-documented by clinical trials. I have been warning you about this since the 1990s. It occurs because statins prevent production of cholesterol in your liver, and while doing so, they inadvertently also prevent formation of CoQ10. So statins lower your CoQ10. Are you with me?

4. CoQ10 is one of your body's most powerful antioxidants and it protects your brain, heart, liver, breast, prostate, lungs and kidneys from free radical damage.

Many scientific leaders say that antioxidants protect your cells from oxidative damage. When you run low on antioxidants, you have a greater risk of cell damage which could translate to a higher risk for cancer.

The study result may not be conclusive yet, but it doesn't surprise me. I believe the reason for dreadful side-effects of medications is due to their drug-mugging effect. Drugs steal nutrients, plain and simple. I've posted more information about this effect on if you CLICK HERE , which explains a little bit more about how various medications can slowly steal the life out of you.

Dozens of other medications deplete your CoQ10 stash, little by little. These include:

Most diabetic drugs

Estrogen-containing hormones like patches and shots

Hormone Replacement Drugs

Birth control pills

Most blood pressure pills

HCTZ

Many tri-cyclic antidepressants and

Some psychiatric meds

Many many more (over 100 other medications)

If you are taking any of the medications that deplete CoQ10, it may be wise to supplement with 50 to 200mg CoQ10 each day, or use the active form of CoQ10 called "Ubiquinol."

Did You Know?

Dandelion herb may help prevent or slowly dissolve gallstones. Ask your doctor about this if you have gallbladder disease.

More From Suzy Cohen--

Some Medications Increase Skin Cancer Risk
Use Caution When Stopping Your Medication
</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.basilandspice.com/healing-and-wellness/you-are-not-completely-to-blame-for-your-obesity.html"><rss:title>You Are Not Completely To Blame For Your Obesity</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.basilandspice.com/healing-and-wellness/you-are-not-completely-to-blame-for-your-obesity.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Fish Oil Insulin Resistance Hormones Book Review 5 Stars Kelly Jad'on Sears, Barry Toxic Fat Zone Omega Rx Reservatrol Inflammation Best Seller Glycemic GLA Chronic Disease Eicosanoids Obesity Overweight</dc:subject>
 by Kelly Jad’on

Book Review: Toxic Fat: When Good Fat Turns Bad (Thomas Nelson, 2008)

by Barry Sears

“If you have a chronic disease (diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, or a neurological disorder), it’s quite likely that a major underlying cause of your current condition comes from seemingly well-meaning governmental agricultural programs initiated more than 30 years ago.”—Dr.Barry Sears

Dr. Sears spent two years researching Toxic Fat. This new book may be a bit controversial, but it may also be groundbreaking as the general public begins to read about why our country’s citizens have physically changed during the last 25 years.

Dr. Sears mapped out Toxic Fat in 13 chapters covering: the obesity epidemic, nutrition, inflammation, good and toxic fat, toxic fat syndrome, back to his Zone Diet, fish oil benefits, anti-inflammatory meals and recipes.

The Toxic Fat Syndrome—What is it?

Dr. Sears writes that the condition occurs when obesity is viewed as inflammation-induced and is either benign or malignant. As malignant, the fat acts like a tumor, it quickly spreads to every organ in the body. The process begins with excess body fat, spreading through the blood, resulting with chronic disease—Alzheimer’s, allergies, asthma, Type-2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease. Signs of the silent inflammation are high triglycerides, low HDL, and high insulin.

Toxic Fat also includes several appendixes which should NOT be skipped over, but read thoroughly as they provide explanations from a doctor-researcher’s understanding, made comprehensible to the general public.

Blood Testing For Silent Inflammation—an important section about what you need to do for yourself.

Hormones—“While some hormones, such as estrogen, testosterone, and growth hormone, do decrease with age, others—such as insulin and pro-inflammatory eicosanoids—increase with age….Ultimately by controlling both insulin and eicosanoids, you will achieve the fountain of youth (improved wellness) by reversing Toxic Fat Syndrome.”

Fish Oil—Covers usage, history of fish oil, problems with eating contaminated fish.

Insulin Resistance—author explains that the problem begins in adipose tissue.

Nutrigenomics—the diet affects the genes, mentions reservatrol (a wellness buzzword), fruits and vegetables as a necessity, aspirin usage.

Zone Food Blocks—this idea is revisited from prior published books.

Key Points of Toxic Fat:

Being overweight or obese is not necessarily your fault, but rather is a reflection of “adverse interaction of your genes with radical changes that have taken place in the American diet over the past 25 years.”

“Everything you have heard about the ‘cause’ and the ‘cure’ for the current obesity epidemic is probably dead wrong.”

Obesity is a form of cancer driven by inflammation.

Some extra body fat can be good.

Lean doesn’t always mean a person is healthy.

Eating less and exercising more may not work.

Toxic Fat Syndrome is caused by diet.

Results from a changed diet will occur within 30 days.

Diet must include low fat protein, low glycemic carbohydrates, and high dose fish oil.

Super fish oil contains GLA and will slow the rate of aging.

Another buzzword in the weight loss and wellness community is fish oil. Dr.
Sears, a researcher in the dietary control of inflammation, has
included an entire chapter and an Appendix devoted to the subject in Toxic Fat.

Toxic Fat’s recipes are simple to prepare and utilize common ingredients—lean meats, low-fat dairy, beans, spices, herbs, vegetables, fruits. Each recipe is divided into a man’s or woman’s portion requirement. Examples:

Crab Bisque—uses skim or 1% milk

Taco Burger—bun free, prepared with 90% fat-free ground beef

Apple and Cheese Melt—uses low-fat mozzarella

Key to this book, is the Bibliography, where Dr. Sears notes his numerous pages of research.

Toxic Fat is written from a doctor’s medical viewpoint, so that the typical reader can understand what the new research means, how it can be applied, and how weight can be lost. A controversial book, Dr. Sears writes that our obesity epidemic’s roots were planted back in the 1980s when refined carbohydrates (pop/soda, candy, processed foods), and some oils (soy, corn) became cheap. This paired with our dramatic decrease in the consumption of fish oil created what he calls the Perfect Nutritional Storm. Toxic Fat builds upon Dr. Sears’s past books—The Zone, Omega Rx Zone. Not just a do this and lose weight book, Toxic Fat follows the modern scope of wellness for the whole body—which includes weight loss as prevention of further disease. Toxic Fat puts real-time information in the hands of its readers and sets them on the road to recovery and wellness.

A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Barry Sears is the author of several health books, selling more than 5 million copies. He continues his research into the dietary control of inflammation at his non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation.

A BestSeller Review

5 Stars

Related--

Obesity is a Condition

Lifetime Medical Costs of Obesity are Unlikely to Spur Obesity Prevention Efforts

Take Control of Obesity and Diabetes

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.basilandspice.com/healing-and-wellness/having-a-headache.html"><rss:title>Having A Headache?</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.basilandspice.com/healing-and-wellness/having-a-headache.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Pain Hormones Book Review 5 Stars Kelly Jad'on Bernstein, Carolyn McArdle, Elaine The Migraine Brain Harvard Women's Headache Center Migraine Carly Simon Serena Williams Ben Affleck</dc:subject>
by Kelly Jad'on

Book Review: The Migraine Brain: Your Breakthrough Guide to Fewer Headaches, Better Health (Free Press, 2008)

By Carolyn Bernstein, M.D. and Elaine McArdle

With the publishing of The Migraine Brain, a precedent has been set for better prevention and treatment of migraine patients. Written by Carolyn Bernstein, herself a migraine sufferer, but also the Founder and Director of the Women’s Headache Center at Cambridge Health Alliance, Dr. Bernstein empathizes with those who are struck down by the mind-numbing pain of migraines.

Dr. Bernstein refers to those with the headaches as migraineurs, and as a neurologist on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, she has treated thousands of fellow sufferers.

The Migraine Brain seeks to express to readers how to:

Prevent migraines

Find their triggers

Reduce pain and duration of the migraine

Understand her/his own brain

Bernstein’s Points to ponder:

One in every four households in the United States includes a person who get migraines. It is the ninth leading cause of disability among women, and is also one of the most painful conditions. Some women quoted in the book said that natural childbirth was not as easy as a migraine.

Migraine costs the United States $1 billion a year in health costs and about $13 billion in loss of industry.

Most migraine sufferers do not realize they have the condition as it is often misdiagnosed or underreported.

Within the last 15 years, new medications have revolutionized migraine treatment.

Alternative medical treatment, like yoga, ice massage, acupuncture, and biofeedback has been found to help.

Even the famous get migraines. Recognize any of these? Terrell Davis, Troy Aikman, Serena Williams, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Ben Affleck, Whoopi Goldberg, Carly Simon

Foods like chocolate and red wine do not begin migraines, rather for some, foods set off abnormal brain chemistry, which begins the migraine.

At a 3 to 1 ration, more women than men get migraines due to a difference in our brains. 1 in 20 elementary school children get migraines.

Those with migraines are more likely to be depressed.

The Migraine Brain is divided into three large sections, each covering a different aspect of the migraine. Part one helps the reader decide if hers is a true migraine, learn how to find anything that triggers the condition ( Dr. Bernstein lists her own top ten), and covers how female hormones play a part throughout life. There is also a short but important section for men.

Part two discusses how to find the right physician to help you; explains the variety of medications—those that prevent, abort, and rescue; mentions in-hospital treatment; covers recent natural alternative methods for migraine relief.

Part three helps the reader set up her personal wellness plan. Topics covered are family, sex, mental health, travel, home environment, and work.

The Migraine Brain is the kind of book I really like, because it is written by a doctor who is also a researcher, but more important than this, she is a self-advocate—Dr. Carolyn Bernstein truly understands the disease. We all know someone who suffers, sometimes needlessly because of lack of information. By reaching out to both her patients and other readers, Dr. Bernstein has handed them a tool which will empower their lives. I highly recommend The Migraine Brain, and will pass my copy along to my aunt who has suffered her entire life with migraines.

5 Stars

Related--

A Life-Saving Mineral: Magnesium

Why We All Won't Get Cancer

Suzanne Somers Proudly Breaks Through

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.basilandspice.com/healing-and-wellness/would-you-like-to-look-and-feel-younger.html"><rss:title>Would You Like To Look And Feel Younger?</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.basilandspice.com/healing-and-wellness/would-you-like-to-look-and-feel-younger.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Perricone, Nicholas Fish Oil Book Review 5 Stars Rosenfeld, Isadore Perlmutter, David Younger You Braverman, Eric Antiaging Bioidentical Hormones Menopause GABA Serotonin Diagnostic Testing Andropause</dc:subject>

by Kelly Jad'on

Book Review: Younger You (McGraw-Hill, 2007) by Eric R. Braverman, M.D. is the director of the Place for Achieving Total Health (PATH) Medical Center in New York. Younger You has received positive comments from notable doctor-authors: Nicholas Perricone, Isadore Rosenfeld, and David Perlmutter.

Younger You is broken into 6 parts:

Your ageprint—you’re only as old as your oldest part. Disease occurs in stages so catch problems early with suggested ultrasounds for proper treatment. Braverman recommends the usage of bioidentical hormones; supplementation—zinc, fish oil, and others; follow a diet rich in fruits and vegetables; exercise. This section includes ageprint quizzes to help the reader identify problems within the body and begin him on the path to wellness.

Your brain as the key—lack of dopamine, a brain-produced chemical, lowers energy, affecting the rest of the body. Braverman explains the correlation between the brain and obesity, offering several possibilities of solution. The seven stages of cognitive decline, the loss of GABA, and the relation of Serotonin to happiness are pointed out and effective methods to counter undesirable conditions are discussed.

The overworked cardiovascular system—referred to as “cardiopause” by Braverman, it is the slowing and aging of the heart. An estimated 700,000 Americans will have a heart attack this year. Braverman asserts that the condition can be reversed. The top five risk factors include family history, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol.

The modulating systems—includes thyropause (the weakening of metabolism), immunopause (the inability to fight infection)

Aging Sexuality—relates to, hormones, menopause for women and andropause for men.

Your Aging Frame: Bones, Muscles, and Skin—bone and muscle loss are not inevitable, but must be addressed instead.

Key concepts of Younger You:

Conventional medicine is equivalent to an assembly line, only viewing parts of the body for treatment, rather than using an integrative whole-person approach.

Virtually all illness and disease can be detected from the outside.

When one part of the body fails, it signals an aging code to the rest of the body, which responds in kind.

Each part of the body has markers for aging. These are the warning signs.

Diagnostic testing pinpoints the aging code of every organ.

Throughout Younger You, Braverman shows the reader which natural supplements and their dosages will help for each condition/disease. He also suggests new research to support testing. A good example from p. 166 “Minor leaks of protein in your urine (albuminuria) is an early indicator of stroke or heart attack." Interspersed, Braverman also refers to various types of food, explaining how certain foods benefit or harm the body.

Considered to be a book about wellness, Younger You is also about antiaging. The author, David Servan-Schreiber tells his story of how he discovered his own brain cancer while testing an MRI machine, how he felt about his diagnosis, and what issues he faced. This autobiography is truly fascinating as Servan-Schreiber lowers the privacy walls surrounding his life, to allow us in. He has been a cancer survivor for 16 years. David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD, is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and cofounder of the Center for Integrative Medicine.

As a physician who has also been a patient himself, Servan-Schreiber wants the West to know what the recent discoveries in the world of cancer research are and how they can benefit us. The major points of Anticancer:

The Western diet creates conditions for the disease.

Our bodies are making defective cells all of the time.

Each of us also has a body designed to fight the process of tumor development.

Sugar and stress do feed cancer.

There are physical effects from feelings of helplessness and unhealed wounds which affect our ability to restore our health.

Benefits of reading Anticancer: Servan-Schreiber explains:

How to find the right blend of traditional and alternative care

How to minimize environmental toxins

How to reap the benefits of exercise, yoga, and meditation

How to learn about ways to achieve life balance and good nutrition to combat it

How to develop a science-based anticancer diet

Servan-Schreiber places a major emphasis on our food. Many cancer patients, relying on their oncologists’ advice, believe that they can eat whatever they wish, thinking it will have no bearing on their wellness. Servan-Schreiber states that this simply isn’t true. He outlines the importance of food and its synergy with the body showing the research behind eating well. Key topics include refined sugars, red meat, fats, organic, garlic, turmeric, and toxins.

Also included within the book’s middle is an Anticancer Action Plan, for quick reference. It is a tool for cancer prevention, and a wellness guide for those living with the disease. Anticancer offers considerable scientific-backed research to support its lifetime living plan. The only negative--it wasn't published quickly enough. I have personally recommended this book to others who live with cancer.

5 Stars

David Servan-Schreiber's Blog-

Moving Beyond Cancer Survival Statistics
Exercise Protects Against Cancer

Research Shows The Anticancer Diet Works
</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.basilandspice.com/healing-and-wellness/pomegranate-juice-reduces-erectile-dysfunction.html"><rss:title>Pomegranate Juice Reduces Erectile Dysfunction</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.basilandspice.com/healing-and-wellness/pomegranate-juice-reduces-erectile-dysfunction.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Antioxidant Bowden, Jonny Pomegranate Erectile Dysfunction The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth</dc:subject>

 Jonny

cover of People Magazine. It's definitely the up-and-coming star of the
juice hit parade, and with good reason.

Researchers at
Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa suggest that long-term
consumption of pomegranate juice may help slow aging and protect
against heart disease. The lead researcher, Professor Michael Aviram,
said that pomegranate juice contained the highest antioxidant capacity
of any beverage they tested including other juices, red wine and even
green tea.

A study presented at the American urological
Association Annual Meeting looked at 48 men who had been treated for
prostate cancer and were given 8 ounces of pomegranate juice to drink
daily. Drinking the juice significantly lengthened the amount of time
it took for the men's average PSA to double (PSA being a warning sign
for prostate cancer). At least a half a dozen studies have shown
positive effects of pomegranate on the heart.

I'm a big fan of pomegranate juice, and sang its praises in The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth.
So I read with great interest when my friend Mark Blumenthal, president
of the American Botanical Council, sent me a new research monograph.
The American Botanical Council is one of the premiere portals for
serious, scientific research on herbs. They're my "go-to" source when I
want to find out what the science really says on any herb, and their
monographs are first rate.

The monograph in question was on
Pom Wonderful, one of the most popular of the supermarket brands of
pomegranate juice. (I was surprised to find out that "Wonderful" isn't
just the manufacturers description of the product- it's actually a
specific, California-grown variety of Pomegranates, much like
"Delicious" is a kind of red apple.)

Before I tell you what the
monograph said, a few words of background and full disclosure. I don't
have any connection to Pom Wonderful, and in fact, was predisposed not
to like it much, thinking it might be just another sweetened juice
drink that was trying to capitalize on the well-documented health
benefits of "real," pure pomegranate juice. I don't sell it, don't own
stock in it, and don't benefit in any way financially if you go out and
buy it.

Just wanted to get that out of the way.

But the
fact is, this is really, really good stuff. (Truth be told, I was
surprised.) In research reported in the monograph, POM Wonderful PJ was
found, in antioxidant activity, to be 100 times more powerful than
blueberry juice and 300 times more powerful than grape juice. Turns out
there are a total of 6 published human clinical trials on POM Wonderful
PJ, including 4 cardiovascular studies and one on erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction? Yup. Apparently the antioxidant
properties of Pomegranate juice may increase nitric oxide production,
improve smooth muscle relaxation and reduce atherosclerotic plaque, all
of which can contribute to ED. Forty two of the fifty-three subjects
who completed the ED study attributed an improvement to drinking the
beverage.

A word of clarification. Great as it may be, Pom
Wonderful still has 32 grams of sugar per 8 ounce serving, (a problem
with virtually all fruit juices, not just Pom Wonderful ). If you're
watching your sugar, if you're on a low-carb diet, or if you've got
Diabetes or Metabolic Syndrome, this is something to be aware of, and
this may not be a great food choice for you.

But if you drink
juice and you don't have a problem with the sugar, Pom Wonderful is a
rarity- a great supermarket brand, widely available, that seems to
really deliver what it promises.

More From Jonny Bowden--

Diet War Studies

Fish Oil Could Save 70,000 Lives Each Year

Oxidized Cholesterol Leads To Damage

</rss:item></rdf:RDF>
