Wu-long Tea And Green Tea Scam Warning!

Tom Venuto--

You’ve probably seen the advertisements:

“Drink oolong tea and lose a jeans size every 7 days!”…

“Burn 20 lbs of fat in 30 days with green tea!” …

Maybe you even watched Oprah a few years ago when Dr. Perricone said that switching your coffee for green tea would help you take off the pounds.

You may have also read or watched countless news stories which say how healthy it is to drink green tea.

The odds are good that if you’re interested in improving your health and losing fat, you probably either drink tea, take a green tea supplement or you’ve at least thought about it.

But what if I told you that most of the fat reducing claims for green tea were absolute, total BS, based on misinterpretation or deliberate misreporting of the research?

Unfortunately, it’s true. If you’ve bought green tea based on the claim that it causes large reductions in body fat, then you have been scammed.

Here are the facts:

Green tea DOES stimulate your metabolism.

However, the research is very unclear about what kind of impact this small, short term increase in metabolism will have on your bodyweight in the long term

In the most often quoted study (Dulloo, 1999), A swiss research team found that 270 mg of green tea extract 3X a day increased metabolic rate by the equivalent of about 79 calories on average and increased the oxidation of fat as the fuel source.

If you do the math, it appears that 79 kcal a day would add up to an extra pound of fat lost every 44 days. Not much, but you’ll take it, right? Hypothetically, that would add up to an extra 8 pounds lost per year.

What advertisements quoting this study don’t tell you is that this and other similar studies did not even measure long term change in body fat percentage or bodyweight. They only measured a 24- hour increase in energy expenditure.

One study which is used as marketing ammunition to claim that wu-long tea burns 2.5 times more fat than green tea was based only on a 120-minute increase in energy expenditure! (reminds me of that Mark Twain quote: “There are lies, d--ed lies, and then there are statistics”)

Numerous follow up studies have confirmed the short term increase in metabolism, but the studies are mixed on whether green tea improves weight reduction or maintenance in the long term.

The research IS compelling, but not conclusive.

As for ad claims that say you’ll lose a lot of weight just from drinking green tea… absolute BS! Hopefully the Federal Trade Commission will catch up with these scammers sooner rather than later, as the marketing messages on the Internet are getting louder and bolder every day.

As for health benefits - green tea is certainly a champ. It’s high in antioxidants and there are more than 2,000 research citations about potential health benefits of green tea (not to mention a 5,000 year history of use in China and the far east).

Even if you’re a skeptic, green tea is hard not to like and it’s hard to dispute that it’s a good idea to add green tea to your nutrition program as one part of a well-balanced fitness lifestyle.

But when it comes to claims for large and rapid losses in bodyweight and bodyfat, (especially the wu-long tea ads that are currently all over the internet), buyer beware.

The science we do have says that the thermogenic effect of green tea - while very real - is also very small.

Train hard and expect success always,

Tom Venuto

Drinking Tea Burns Calories

Cheryl Forberg--

Who knew that drinking tea burns calories? That's right. Two to three cups of green tea per day can kick up your metabolism by 80 calories per day. It may not sound like alot, but when you're trying to lose weight, every calorie counts. Besides that, green tea contains other healthy compounds that provide all sorts of healthy benefits, including slowing the aging process.

As for the metabolism part, there is a plant chemical found mostly in green teas called EGCG (ok if you really have to know, it stands for epicgallocatechin gallate). Studies have shown that consuming 300mg of EGCG a day can promote a mild metabolism boosting benefit.

But before you rush out to load up on bottles of green tea drinks from the market, check the labels carefully. Many are sweetened (adding lots of calories or artificial sweetener). In fact, I saw one bottled "green tea" drink in the market that touted its calorie-burning benefits, even though it contained only 55 mg of EGCG per 16 ounce bottle. That means you'd have to drink six of those 16-ounce bottles in one day to have the same benefit from three cups of brewed green tea. (plus those six bottles would cost an awful lot more than 3 green tea bags!).

Don't worry too much about getting the jitters from drinking green tea. Though it does contain caffeine (50 mg vs 137mg found in a cup of coffee), the caffeine in green tea is surrounded by plant chemicals (called tannic acid compounds). They slow the release of green tea's caffeine into the bloodstream, thus resulting in fewer feelings of agitation or jitters which many people experience from drinking coffee. Bottoms up!

Suzy Cohen--

Question: I’ve had two heart attacks in four years. I am short of breath and tired; my doctors say I have congestive heart failure and severe blockages in the arteries that go to my heart. Are there natural heart remedies that really work at this stage of the game? I want to make it to my daughter’s wedding in November. – S.P., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Answer: Yes, there are wonderful heart nutrients that I’ve seen work miracles in people who were literally sent home to die. Before we get to those, go to your kitchen and clean out the cabinets. Get rid of any foods and pastries that contain “trans fats” or the word “hydrogenated” on the label. That’s the stuff that clogs up your arteries and prevents blood from flowing to your heart (and brain).

If you want to loosen the gunk from your arteries, you’ll have to get used to the taste of tea, like green tea or red tea (Rooibos). Drink a cup daily so the natural ingredients can strip clean your arteries, and get rid of fatty deposits that are blocking blood flow. These teas also help preserve your vision and kidney function.

Hawthorne berry : It comes from plants. You can take supplements and fluid extracts or drink hawthorne tea. I love hawthorne—just don’t over do it. Hawthorne is more effective with time, not in large doses. It relaxes and widens your arteries so blood flows to and from your heart, improving circulation. This makes hawthorne essential for people with swollen ankles or cold hands and feet. Many well-designed clinical trials conclude that hawthorne is beneficial for people with congestive heart failure.

Arginine: Another powerful and inexpensive cardiac tonic –it’s actually an amino acid that increases blood flow to the heart, and all over. That’s why you find it in sex enhancement pills. Arginine unclogs arteries, increasing cardiac blood flow and making your arteries more elastic. Arginine relieves that feeling of being winded.

Coenzyme Q10: This antioxidant powers every heart beat and gives your cells some oxygen. It helps your heart beat in perfect rhythm.

Fish Oils or Cod Liver Oil: These provide essential fatty acids which help regulate cholesterol and blood pressure. Studies show that these supplements may prevent the gunk from building up and sticking to your arteries in the first place.

D- Ribose: A natural, simple sugar that you need to make energy. Ribose improves the pumping action of your heart and a study showed that it helped improve heart function in patients undergoing open heart surgery. Plus, it gives you more energy.

Magnesium: Reduces blood pressure and acts like a drug, I mean like ‘calcium channel blocker’ drugs. It balances out minerals and keeps your heart from going into a spasm.

Readers:

A study came out last week in The Journal of the American Heart Association and it proves what I’ve been telling you for years: Cholesterol that goes down too low can cause memory loss and dementia.

And, even though tea might be in the Ukra’s genes, his father became a tax accountant and Ukra, himself, began his career in business, before returning to his roots in the tea trade. Being a connoisseur of fine foods, wines, tobacco and most of all, teas, Ukra began to purchase rare teas at auctions and meet with fellow enthusiasts during his world travels. As his passion grew, he began looking to establish a place for teaching and learning about teas in Los Angeles. Ukra purchased the original Tea Garden & Herbal Emporium nearly three years ago. It’s at the Tea Garden that “Dr. Tea” was born. During one of its ‘Teas for Tots’ programs, Ukra was speaking to a group of eight year olds about tea when one child commented that he looked like a doctor and another child responded, “he’s Dr. Tea.” The name stuck and from that day forward his staff and visitors began calling Ukra, “Dr. Tea.” For nearly three decades, Dr. Tea has traveled the world to pursue his studies of tea and is considered to be a leading authority on the subject.
